Let's talk stimming

Let's talk about stimming.

The term is most often associated with those on the autism spectrum, althought many use it (autistic individuals too) as a way to cope with sensory overload.

Stimming is a response to environments that cause our nervous systems an overload. Stimming helps keep our sensory systems in balance.

Think of it as released excess energy or seeking excess energy.

Stimming is a response to help many stay calm or withstand/block out uncomfortable sensory input. For me, when I'm getting outside my ability to feel calm: 😍I fidget with my hands (hand wringing), 😍feet tapping/shaking, 😍touch my face, 😍twirl/tuck my hair, 😍avoid eye contact (wearing blue ray glasses). 😍wear hats to hide eye contact.

Think back to childhood and what did you get growled to stop doing. You were probably stimming in an environment you wanted to leave.

How I incorporate regulation is with somatic movement, my favorite is intention dance (spin/shake/flap). Intention dance is a somatic practice.
