Somatic Awareness: key to shifting energy

"Life is always better in your body. Get out of your mind." Lebo Grand

With client’s interest, one technique I may teach in sessions is called Somatic Awareness.

Somatic awareness also involves learning how to calm or discharge that stress, tension and trauma.

Somatic awareness techniques are body-focused to help us calm our nervous systems that have been overloaded by stress.

During a somatic session, I may guide clients to focus on their underlying physical and/or emotional and/or behavioural sensation(s).

From there, the mind-body exercises may include breath work, meditation, visualization, energy work, grounding, and/or sensation awareness work. My role is soley to teach client's various somatic tools that they may incorporate into their lifestyle.

“When we are grounded in our awareness, we can be more present with what we are experiencing in our bodies — in all the spaces that live between our head and our feet.”

Raegan Robinson

For me, the key to somatic sessions is to teach you how to recognize what your body is telling you while integrating strategies to help regulate your nervous system.

Stim dancing (moving all body parts especially arms) is my favorite somatic practice. Although, it isn't something I would teach in a 1 to 1 session. The reason why is it's a practice that one has to loose all inhabitations and just move their body freely to music, sound, with nature.

When negative thoughts, emotions, behaviours rise up, I crank the music loud and with a strong base. (I grew up in 80s😅)

Stim is short for self-stimulatory movements, stimming is the rhythmic, repetitive movement used to self-regulate, helping manage our emotions and to process sensory input from our environment. Essentially what Im doing is releasing the negatice thoughts, emotions, behaviours with a positive. *I may get brave enough someday to video tape myself for a visual.

To discuss working with me in person either in Fredericton area or St. George/Southern NB area email attm247@gmail.com I also offer online sessions.
