SPD Awareness Month

October is Sensory Processing Disorder

Month.

A very much over looked sensory awareness. I recently started using sensory processing assessments as a tool to aid adults to maneuver in their environments. Some get the assessment, some get the assessment and counselling. It's a personal choice what individuals do with the information.

In my 25 years of being in the educational field working with students with exceptionalities and my 10 years working in the men

tal health field, I saw the rise in autism, when I worked in mental health, at that time it was labelled PDD (pervasive developmental disorder) I can remember doing reports on the prevleance of it in the province.

For me, sensory was a common denominator for students struggling in the school environment. What does that tell you about the environment for some students? As an adult with workplace PTSD, I can not enter building that look like insitutions. the lights. the smells. the sounds. the crowds.

When I was doing

my masters, I've wrote several research papers on SPD, ADHD, Autism to name a few. The past few years for me, I actually forgot what I know and my experience with exceptionalities. PTSD does that to a person, especially when it's workplace PTSD.

Lately, my previous research/experience is coming full circle. As you can see many labels have similiar if not exact same symptom checklist. That's why I personally wasn't a fan of labels. However, behaviours is what I learned to focus on. What was it telling me.

Quite often, if not most of the time, it was something/someone in the environment triggering an individual with a behaviour. Learning to recognize what your behaviours/thoughts/emotions are telling you takes time. Healing involved ownership of one self through various modalities. Finding the right team to work with you is key.
